What Makes the Difference is Our Team

Patient Centered Care

The diagnosis of cancer or a blood disease is emotionally charged and physically challenging. It helps to have the support of specialists who truly care; who have the expertise to work with you to choose your best treatment option; the experience to prepare you for what lies ahead; and the compassion to hold your hand through it all.

Communication - We Listen

There is no greater comfort than the simple act of listening. Open communication is the key to effective listening and empowers you to be actively involved in your treatment. From the moment you walk through our doors, the lines of communication flow freely between you, your referring physician and your team of specialists.

Your Team

Parkland’s oncologists are board certified cancer specialists from the Sophia Gordon Cancer Center at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts.

Our clinical team is comprised of nationally-certified oncology nurses, a clinical trials nurse, social worker, laboratory technician and an onsite pharmacist and technician. Certification in oncology nursing demonstrates that a nurse has specialized knowledge and experience in cancer care. They are dedicated caregivers providing you with patient centered care each and every visit.

Clinical Trials Nurse

The clinical trials nurse is also a research professional who is involved in the management of clinical trials as an administrator, coordinator, consultant, educator or researcher. This individual plays a critical part in the planning, establishment and provision of clinical trials available at Parkland.

Oncology Social Worker
The oncology social worker’s concern is for the emotional and psychological care of our patients, their families and their caregivers. An expert in networking, research and resource development, our oncology social worker looks to enhance quality of life for you and your family. These services assist through counseling, stress and symptom management, care planning, case management, navigation, education and advocacy. Additional services include:

  • Support groups and resources for caregivers and family members, including children.
  • Assistance with individual and family issues
  • Financial concerns
  • Children’s bereavement groups
  • Educational support for different treatment concerns
  • Information on caring for  your body after treatment
  • Integrative therapies including massage, expressive art, nutrition,
  • Reiki and modified exercise programs

Nutrition and Exercise

Nutrition

Cancer can affect your body’s ability to utilize nutrients. During your treatment, it is essential that you maintain good nutrition to assist your body with the healing process. The registered dietitians at the Parkland Center for Oncology & Hematology translate the science of nutrition into food you can eat. They are your nutrition experts, assisting you with obtaining the optimum results from your treatment.

Exercise Resources

An important supplement to your treatment, exercising on a regular basis has shown to decrease the side effects of chemotherapy. Individual counseling and classes are geared to your level of fitness.

Your Experience

At Parkland’s Center for Oncology & Hematology you will find the hope and inspiration that comes from knowing that your care, comfort, and convenience are our highest priorities. Our physicians and nurses make the extra effort to know you, to listen to you, and to work with you to design a comprehensive treatment plan – one that takes into consideration not only physical treatment of the disease, but your emotional and psychological care as well. During this process you will develop a one-on-one relationship with your own treatment nurse and oncologist; relationships we feel honored to share.

Our on-site pharmacy enhances medication safety and optimizes patient therapy through the use of advanced technology and adherence to strict sterile preparation standards.  Someone is always available to answer any of the questions you may have with regard to your treatment regimen.
