Cardiac rehabilitation
Cardiac rehabilitation aims to help you recover from a cardiovascular event — such as a heart attack or heart failure — or other debilitating heart condition. This recovery process usually involves physical therapy, exercise and education to rebuild and maintain your heart strength.
Our cardiac rehabilitation services
Your cardiologist and primary care doctor will likely recommend cardiac rehabilitation after a serious event or to help you manage chronic heart diseases.
Our two-phase cardiac therapy program
Certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and medically directed by a New England Heart & Vascular Institute board-certified cardiologist, our program offers care in two phases:
- Phase I — Begins while you're receiving inpatient care at our hospital
- Phase II — Starts soon after discharge and continues to help you improve your functional ability as quickly as possible
The program components typically include:
- Educational courses to help you understand your condition and avoid future heart problems
- Goal setting for realistic lifestyle changes
- Integrative care services, such as Reiki and massage therapy
- Medically-supervised, progressive exercise and activity
- Nutrition services, including one-on-one counseling with our registered dietitians
- Smoking cessation education
- Stress management and emotional support
- Weight management consultations
If you need a referral for our cardiac rehabilitation program, call (603) 432-1500, extension 3076. We'll work with your primary care doctor to schedule an appointment. You may be required to take a treadmill stress test as a baseline for creating the most effective exercise program for you.
Ongoing heart health support
Through our cardiac rehabilitation maintenance program, you'll perform independent exercise under staff supervision. You can also continue to support your heart health through:
- Community events, such as the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk and Go Red for Women
- Educational programs
- Health fairs
- Screenings
