Lymphedema therapy
Often affecting those undergoing cancer care or who have chronic venous insufficiency, lymphedema is fluid retention and swelling in the legs, arms and other parts of the body resulting from damaged or missing lymph nodes.
Lymphedema is a life-long condition that must be managed using therapies, such as manual lymph drainage, compression therapy using multilayered bandages, remedial exercises or skin care. We may also suggest a combination of these therapies, known as complete decongestive therapy (CDT).
These therapies aim to provide:
- Decreased muscular and soft tissue tightness
- Decreased pain, discomfort, tingling or numbness
- Improved appearance of the affected areas
- Improved function of the lymphatic system
- Improved mobility and range of motion
- Knowledge of your condition and how to manage your symptoms
- Reduced risk of secondary complications and hospitalization
Occupational therapy
Occupational therapy helps people develop or recover skills for daily living and return to ordinary life. If a work-related injury is sustained, we provide therapy through our occupational medicine program. Our range of therapy services include:
- Adaptive equipment and assistive technology — Recommendations for and education on the use of wheelchairs, walkers and alternative communication devices
- Hand therapy — Addresses fractures, tendinitis, amputations, nerve-related issues, impingements, sprains, strains, wounds, scars, pain and similar conditions
