Symptoms of sleep problems
Serious sleep problems usually cause side effects that you can identify at home. You could be experiencing a sleep disorder if you:
- Fall asleep during the day, even after a good night’s sleep
- Feel sleepiness is affecting your performance at work or school
- Kick while sleeping or have trouble keeping your legs still at night
- Lie awake for more than thirty minutes before falling asleep
- Snore loudly
- Stop breathing or gasp for breath while sleeping
- Wake up at night and cannot go back to sleep
Types of sleep disorder tests we offer
We diagnose sleep disorders in adults and children who are 8 years old and older. The tests our specialists administer usually take between seven and ten hours. We may use electrodes and sensors to collect information. Your care team will review your data while monitoring you by video. The studies we perform include:
- Home screenings — Once you have the necessary equipment at home, your sleep specialist will teach you how to attach the sensors and use your screening device.
- Maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT) — Multiple sessions of this test can measure your ability to stay alert and awake during the day. Your sleep technician may use the MWT to see how well sleep disorder treatment is working for you.
- Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) — During this test, your sleep technician will observe four to five naps over eight to ten hours. You’ll take a twenty minute nap every two hours, but must otherwise stay awake.
- Polysomnography— In this sleep study, we will attach electrodes to your head, chest and legs. While sleeping, your sleep technician will monitor your nighttime sleep stages, respiratory airflow and leg movements.
If a sleep test indicates you would benefit from a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP), your technician may wake you up and place a mask over your nose for the remainder of the test.
Treatments for sleep disorders
One of our sleep physicians will review and analyze your study results following testing. They will send your primary care physician a copy of the final report, so you can discuss any diagnoses and treatment options with them.
CPAP and BiPAP titration studies are two treatment options that involve placing a mask over your nose during sleep. Pressure from an air blower gently forces air into the nasal passages to improve your breathing. You can complete a brief nap study at our sleep center to get comfortable with the mask before sleeping in it.
